CleoMentored By: Eeshaun Cleo is currently studying Visual Communication in Temasek Polytechnic. She is deeply influenced by the human condition, nature, ethnic cultures, folk music and anything genuinely ethereal. Esther LimMentored By: Eeshaun www.cargocollective.com/dangerousbeans Hello, her name is Esther (and she is also known as Dangerous Beans). Currently a first-year Visual Communication student at Temasek Polytechnic (School of Design), Esther is hopelessly ill-stricken with a condition known as Compulsive Doodling. Compulsive doodlers doodle everywhere about everything at every given time. While not referring to herself in the Third Person (or compulsively doodling), Esther likes to make un-sense so people will leave her to her own devices (ie. the Magical Book of Compulsive Doodles). As you can already see, Esther is probably (insert youth jargon) full of shit though she worries unhealthily that she isn't interesting enough. So, be nice and make friends with her; she is probably a very, very lonely person.

Yan QianMentored By: Eeshaun www.cargocollective.com/mentalreverie Yan Qian feels sorry for the number of trees that had been killed for her doodles. Blame it on her wandering mind, she said. Her mind, infested with happily morbid thoughts, is constantly searching and wondering. She seeks solace in the arms of solitude and silence, liberation whilst immersing herself in her thoughts. An advocate for risk taking, she feels that a life full of mindless routines where days are duplicates of each other isn't worth living.

I believe that Art should not be a competition field but rather, a playground.

AidaMentored By: Mas (Wanton Doodle) Hello, I am Aida. I love illustration, and it comes with an incurable weakness for the cute and cuddly. Stick two glassy eyes on anything and I call it good design. It is an unkind condition because everything I create somehow ends up with these tiresome cutesy features, no matter how hard I try to do otherwise. People call it my style but really, my drawings take on a life of their own. I am most inspired by childhood. I stock up on creative juices by sitting through episodes of Winnie the Pooh and Sesame Street. There is so much freedom and wild spontaneity in a child’s imagination that I never want to lose it. When you grow up, you stop noticing things because you think you’ve seen it all. Everyday stops being an adventure and you stop singing nursery rhymes and songs about how lovely the day is. I love rainbow colours and polka dots too much to ever grow up.

Audrey LeongMentored By: Mas (Wanton Doodle) Audrey was born in Singapore and raised by the Internet. After graduating from Nanyang Polytechnic's School of Digital Media Design in 2008, she spent two years in Melbourne alternately basking in the freedom of an Arts education and being crushed under the weight of essay research and deadlines. Since obtaining her B.A., she has embarked on the journey of discovering ways to earn a living from everything she is passionate about. Her interests may be varied and nebulous, but mostly fall within the domains of the written word and the illustrated illustration. If she had to name one particular source of inspiration, it would be complete strangers. She is often found lurking on webpages that contain opinions, anecdotes, or even life stories in the form of comments (the more detailed, the better). She has an unnatural fondness for parentheses, comedy that's slightly off-centre, and, like most other people who want to give the appearance of quirkiness and independence, cats. Her hobbies include doodling on paper with naught but a pigment ink pen, devouring books, and indulging in other forms of vicarious living through fictional characters (truthfully, she means movies and games).

Joan ChongMentored By: Mas (Wanton Doodle) My love for illustration began at a very young age. I doodle and colour everywhere – on textbooks, newspapers, even my parents’ books if they were left unattended. Low Kiah Hwee (Rixou)Mentored By: Sonny Liew Kiah Hwee first experienced comics production as a student reporter with local Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao. She took on freelance commissions through university and even when she started work. In mid 2011, she decided that the only way to know how far she can run with her passion for story telling through comics was to get completely involved, and hence left her job to pursue illustrating full time. To date, Kiah Hwee has worked with various commercial companies and independent authors to create content like educational comics, book illustrations and character designs. She participated in the Ignite! Graphic novel publishing initiative sponsored by Media Development Authority Singapore (MDA) in 2009, and is now working on an original full length graphic novel. A dogged optimist, Kiah Hwee believes in the power of a good story to carry positive messages. To her, the cycle of creation only attains completion when a story is read. She also loves working with, and off, other fertile minds. Kiah Hwee graduated with a degree in Architecture from the National University of Singapore, where she learnt that creative work involves both inspiration and a lot of perspiration.

Melvin TanMentored By: Sonny Liew Age: 23+ Favourite Artists: Paperrad, Ryan Trecartin, Bernhard Willhelm, Justin Lieberman Favourite Music: B-Quartet, Kap Bambino, Sleighbells, Washed Out Favourite Movie: Eating Air by Kelvin Tong Melvin thinks he is a designer by day and an artist by night. A Visual Communications student in NTU, School of Art Design and Media, he has taken a year off studies and is currently dedicated to self-discovery. As a freelance designer, he has worked with a spectrum of clientele to resolve their design related problems. As an artist, he works for himself. No matter the technical progression, he will always return to illustrations. He embraces the intuitive style of illustration more than any other conventional styles, unless he is directly addressing it. It becomes no surprise that he has a distinctively 'crappy' way of shading in his blacks, as seen everywhere in his drawings. He also has an affinity with ballpoint pens and trusts only them for his drawings. It is his only connection with his dark past... He scribbled stuff with such pens in secondary school in his text books. Today, he likes to explore the hyper realism of hard sell pop culture while holding an overarching escapist and existentialist stance. His works carry a unique childlike quality with an almost ironic, fatalist resonance. He is also probably rather experimental, in constant search for new and fresh ways to create visuals or use old materials in a different manner. He likes to use programs like Nuke or a digital scanner to make trippy things. He seems to be drawn towards entrepreneurial art forms for their immersive and expansive nature. His personal interest of late is dabbling in video and apparel design.

Alifiya ZakirMentored By: Chow Chee Yong www.facebook.com/pages/Alifiya-Zakir-Photography/235282149838662 Alifiya Zakir strives to achieve the emotional connection of the surroundings and the subject to the viewer, hoping that this aesthetic value would help the viewer connect to her art. She describes her style to be defined by dreamy and surreal concepts with a pinch of themes. She likes to challenge herself to create new possibilities with her photographs. She is a keen enthusiast when it comes to portraits and often pushes her subjects and herself beyond their comfort zones (eg. to shoot in the rain, be in the sea, lie on the ground etc) to create unique and thought-provoking photographs. We are living in a generation where almost everyone can afford to get a decent camera and try out photography. It’s important to think out of the box. Alifiya Zakir has been recently featured in culturepush.com and her works have been showcased in Noise Singapore showcase exhibition in 2011.

She graduated from the B.F.A programme in photography at the School of Art, Design and Media in NTU. Man Nga has always explored and created images which reflect her social and personal experiences. She believes that photography is a journey of self-discovery of bitterness and sweetness: "Looking at the world through the viewfinder is an alien experience. It posts me many questions that cannot be answered. However, the most important thing is to persist in taking photos even in times of being lost, for eventually, my experience will shape me into a better person."

Beaunice Toh Jun YingMentored By: Sha Ying Abstract, unique and individual. Avid photographer Beaunice Toh’s photos are a reflection of her own distinctive personality. Photography started out as a mere pastime for her, but as she grew increasingly comfortable behind the lens, she became powerfully effective in showcasing the world from her perspective behind a camera lens. The social-minded teenager is particularly concerned with the development of one special group of people: youths. She fancies that youths of the 21st century are progressively losing themselves in their constant quest for who they are, and she seeks to express this confused emotion of theirs, hence laying the foundation of her choice of concept. Through the process of this project, she says that she was able to exercise her creativity in full force, without any constraints whatsoever. This prompted her to be that voice of the youths today; to portray to the world the most vulnerable side of them, and to tell the world that complexity is what composites our youths these days.

Chee Wei TeckMentored By: Sha Ying I would like to use photography to show people the unseen side of Singapore and to archive our current situation for future generations to see. I have been organising photo shoots to events and various locations in Singapore through the online photography community www.clubsnap.com. I hope that the people that I bring along to shoot will share their photos and memories with others online. This is also to exchange ideas and learn from others. I also believe in using photography for charity. For example, volunteering to do event shoots for “365 Cancer Prevention Society” flag day and charity dinner the photography interest group I founded – “My Shooting Kakis” Facebook group. Hence photography might not be a job, but it can be used as a “tool”. “What is the Story of my generation?” is a question I ponder. “How will future generations view my era?” is another question that future generations will answer.

Wahlene L. (enelhaw)Mentored By: Teo Chai Guan Wahlene lives among the 7 billion Homo sapiens whose population is ever increasing. She likes to pew pew pew with a camera, some game consoles and her computer. Having graduated with a BFA Hon (Photography and Digital Imaging) in Nanyang Technological University, Wahlene looks for a creative outlook that would allow her to be in control of her artistic vision. Her newfound freedom is in digital imaging and photography; with an interest in portrait, fashion and staged photography. Utilising an idiosyncratic aesthetic that consists of whimsy, humour, light hearted and vast-ranging influences from all forms of visual culture, Wahlene seeks to distill simple ideas that people seemingly forget into her works. She too loves to employ technological tools of trade to create art.

Irene NgMentored By: Yian Huang I believe that photography enables one to present what humanity and Earth have to offer. This includes the lives of people and the cities they have built, and the landscapes of Mother Nature. This passion to discover and photograph the world has brought me to cities such as Toronto, Paris, Tokyo and New York. Pursuing photography while studying law has provided me with a unique experience of being able to empathise with the subjects in my photographs without having an overly strong emotional attachment to them. This has allowed me to understand my subjects without being too affected by their situation, a skill that has been useful when photographing emotional topics. I am presently an undergraduate at the National University of Singapore pursuing a law degree. I have been actively photographing for five years and the Noise Singapore showcase is my first exhibition. I hope it is one of many more to come.

Katrina OcampoMentored By: Yian Huang Since the age of 8, I have enjoyed creating images in my head or picturing scenarios based on what I see around me. I was known for having a short attention span as I was easily distracted by anything in my surroundings that struck my line of vision. Thus, capturing photographs had grown to be a natural instinct for me. When I was given my first digital camera, I felt that I had finally found something to satisfy my desire to instill and document an image in my mind. I also like to look at photographs as much as producing them. I am easily inspired and can spend a whole day just browsing through a gallery of amazing photography. I am particularly fastidious about a photograph's colours – they must, must match. I am also more attracted to capturing rural scenarios than modern, commercial backdrops, as I feel that they have a deeper story to tell, especially having come from the Philippines where I have grown exposure to such scenarios.

Ng YiqinMentored By: Yian Huang The camera is my tool to engage and converse with the world. As an English Literature graduate, my work is influenced by the author Jeanette Winterson who emphasised the unreliability and subjectivity of any narrator. I have applied this to my photography as I constantly challenge how we approach and create every work. It is my intention to explore how subjectivity is used to frame; and to exclude. I am interested in using the camera to capture the relationship between the artist and her subject. This relationship reveals many interesting questions that I hope to explore – is the photographer conscious of her ability to manipulate? Is the camera merely documenting? Through photography, I examine how I relate with my subject and the role that my camera plays. My interests in photography later compelled me to experiment in moving images and heavily involve myself in various film productions. I am currently collaborating with a local Non Governmental Organisation to highlight a social issue through the platform of film. The Noise Exhibition is my first photographic showcase and I am looking forward to more in the future.

Seet Yun TengMentored By: Yian Huang I am a young Singaporean photographer who first developed a love for photography that stemmed from my interest in the arts as a visual arts student. I aim to capture in my photos the intangibles of life – emotions, expressions and atmosphere at the split-second moment they occur – the oft-forgotten and unnoticed, and to ultimately tell a story. I started off doing event photography, but I am also interested in street and documentary photography. For the Noise showcase, I tried my hand at putting together a concept-driven project. I am currently a student of Raffles Institution (Junior College).
